We’re talking things through with Matthew Schultz this week, who is responsible for the brand new track ‘Somewhere FAR.’ With talents that lie in many areas, we chat about his single and what he plans for the future.
Good to chat, Matthew! How long have you been making music for? Do you remember the first song you really loved?
Thank you for the opportunity! I started music at the age of eight, I fell in love with the guitar. In high school I started a band with Chris Daughtry. I loved 80’s music growing up – my favorite song was ‘Africa’ by Toto when I was little. I always loved all genres of music. I got to see Dave Matthews start up while playing at small clubs and loved how he blended sounds from so many cultures.
How do you feel your sound and influences have changed along the way, and are they constantly evolving?
Yes, I started off my music career more of pop/rock style, occasionally incorporating hip-hop features like Jim Jones. My sound is so different today, I enjoy making “feel good” music with more EDM and tropical elements.
What would you say your style is all about?
I feel I have created a signature sound: chilled pop/EDM with elements of reggae, dancehall and Afro Beat blended into the mix. Catchy melodic hooks and cool lyrics.
Which tunes are you particularly feeling right now?
I really love what Major Lazer is doing, I am also a big Fan of Calvin Harris, Tory Lanez and Diplo. I have had the pleasure of working with Gyptian on a lot of tracks recently and he has definitely influenced my music.
What did you enjoy about making your new single ‘Somewhere Far? Where did the inspiration come from?
I wanted to create a perfect track for the end of summer months. The song about craving freedom and adventure with a lover: “She says ‘Take me somewhere far, let’s just jump inside the car, it’s the summer and no wonder I’ve been working way too hard….”. The words and music are combined to create an evocative soundscape that captures the magical feeling of summer and chasing after the good times, a feeling everyone can relate to.
What have been the most fun parts of the year so far for you?
I would say working with Gyptian and Electric Bodega on my last single ‘Promise For Keeps’ (Electric Bodega Remix.) I created a dance contest on Instagram with some of the top dancers from NBC’s World Of Dance called #promiseforkeeps – the videos are still rolling in. I love to see such talented dancers putting their own visual to my music. I am also very happy about all my success on Spotify. ‘Somewhere FAR’ was picked up by Spotify’s Brand New Chill and also hit Viral 50 in Amsterdam and Viral Daily on Spotify Charts.
If you could give an artist just starting out one piece of advice, what would it be?
I would say “dream responsibly.” It is ok to have big dreams of being a major recording artist but you have to realise the odds are tough. I took the route of being a successful banker and pursued music non-stop during any downtime I have. It may have taken longer, but now I have my own label and control my own future.
What do you most want to achieve this year, and why?
I want to finish a full album, that is a huge milestone for me.
