We’re pleased to welcome the super talented Perttu in with us this week, as we discuss his new single and much more. Read on to get to know him better in this exclusive interview….
Thanks for taking the time to speak to us! How long have you been making music for?
Thanks for interviewing. I started at the age of six with drums, them being my primary instrument. Later on I started playing piano too as my secondary instrument. I started the Perttu project in 2016.
How do you feel your sound and influences have changed along the way, and are they constantly evolving?
Personally, music means a journey through different genres and projects. With the Perttu project I started with tropical house. Lately I’ve been interested in bringing more euphoric arpeggios and organic groovy elements such as real drums and bass to my sound. I’ve always combined real instruments in my sound.
What would you say your style is all about?
It’s all about emotion, about finding beauty in rhythms and melodies and making it a journey. I love to make catchy things but also atmospheric and even dreamy sometimes. I think music needs soul.
Which tunes are you particularly feeling right now?
Current pop stuff like Tove Styrke, Shy Martin, and then Daft Punk, Vulfpeck, Alice Phoebe Louis, and opera sound tracks like Pagliacci, pld movie soundtracks, Riz Ortolani, Goblin. I also like trance music. It’s really hard to say, there is so, so much good music and artists coming and going at the moment – tons of underground club music and indie singer/songwriters and musicians.
What did you enjoy about making your new track ‘Milky Way’? Are you happy with how it turned out?
That song gave me so much energy and positivity through dark moments. It helped me to think life doesn’t always have to be so serious. I enjoyed working with the vocalist Malou. In general I love beautiful Asian flute sounds.
How did you meet Malou?
She contacted me via Instagram.
What have been the most fun parts of the year so far for you?
Releasing ‘Milky Way’ and shooting the video for it in Cape Town. Starting my own small club event in Berlin with my roomie Kasperg has been also very nice. I really enjoy performing my sets and I’ve also started working with couple of new interesting artists.
If you could give a producer/act just starting out one piece of advice, what would it be?
Keep it real, put the hours in. Nobody cares, so do it for yourself. The more original your idea is, the less good advice other people will be able to give you. Be open.
What do you most want to achieve this year, and why?
I’m seeking to create exquisitely detailed and carefully constructed auditive pieces, avoiding intention to echo too many stereotypes of any genre in the sound. I want to improve my songwriting and production to create music that resonates in people in positive ways.
And as I’m always joking: I want to break-through so I can become a scientist!
