We are fully taken in by the creative sounds of Berlin duo Kilian & Jo. Having been following them on Spotify for a while now, their newest track ‘Lose Myself’ was a blissful, musically rich slice of their personalities – and we can’t wait for more.
Have a read of our exclusive interview with them, right here.
Thanks for taking the time to speak to us! How has your day been so far?
JO: I had my first beer before breakfast and as I type there’s this nice Indian dude serving me authentic Goan food to my little beach treehouse. So actually, I can’t complain.
KILIAN: Pretty similar, but on the other side of the world. Smoking a joint on my sailing boat right now, so it could be worse.
Since making music, how do you feel your sound and influences have changed along the way? Are they constantly evolving?
We are constantly inspired by new movements and artists and always try to come up with new exciting sounds. For us to stop evolving would be the absolute nightmare. What makes being a musician so exciting is that every day you can explore something new and meet new interesting people.
What would you say your style is all about?
We like brasses. We like a lot of bass. We like things to be rather dark. But we also have this longing for melodies that touch one’s soul.
Which tunes are you particularly feeling right now?
K: IAMDDB – ‘Shades’
J: N.E.R.D – ‘Kites’
What did you enjoy most about making your new single ‘Lose Yourself’?
The flow that we had when we created it. It’s rare that a production comes together in just one session. It just felt very natural and the vocal sort of dictated where we had to go with the music. The whole song took us around one or two weeks, which is why there was never a point of not knowing how to go further or losing the original vibe of the song. I guess you can hear the effortlessness in the song.
What have been the most fun parts of the year for you both, so far?
Working with Bree Runway. She’s hilarious and very inspiring. Also working with Mogli was almost spiritual. Super inspiring. We have songs with both of them coming up, and are really excited to release them.
If you could give a producer just starting out one piece advice, what would it be?
Don’t copy, create your own.
What do you have in the pipeline?
So many good songs we have collected over the last one and a half years. There will be a lot of output in 2018, with a lot of different artists we’ve been working with.
