The massively skilled act Friends In Paris continue to impress with their beautifully crafted melodies and shimmering electronic beats. We caught up with them to hear about how they work together, and what we can expect in the near future.
Do you remember what first got you into making music? How do you feel your sound and style has changed along the way?
Kris: Going way back guitar was my first main draw to music! Jimi Hendrix was my hero along with Django Reinhardt. Then I got more into acoustic finger style stuff and singer/songwriters like John Martyn and Joni Mitchell. I started experimenting with electronic stuff a little later. So in many ways, my personal sound has evolved a lot but it feels the same, like the same energy occurs whether it’s an acoustic instrument or a laptop.
How do you want your music to make people feel?
Kris: Connected!
Which artists or groups do you particularly dig right now?
Kris: I dip into the past a fair bit! “R-Type” by Jo had me hitting the repeat button the other day. On a fresh front, I’m digging that Smart Aleck Kill track plus Mndsn and Bibio!
With you both living in different parts of the world, how do you work together on tunes?
Kris: Dropbox! Generally I’ll write an initial idea and do a demo here in Australia then bounce the stems over to Belgium, where Jeroen does his magic and we just keep bouncing back and forth. It evolves like that.
FLYES and Faisal have just remixed your ‘When Your Heart Is A Stranger’ – what do you like about each version?
Kris: They’re both brilliant in their own way. I love the emotion and headspace in the FLYES version! And the Faisal version makes me want to dance!
Which of your tunes gets requested the most when you’re DJing?
We don’t take requests during DJ sets 🙂
Most memorable show or festival of 2017?
Kris: I caught London Grammar at that beginning of their Australian tour in Fremantle – that was beautiful.
Do you have any more originals or remixes on the horizon right now?
Kris: The ‘Heart’ EP Is dropping soon – can’t wait for that!
How was your summer? What else are you looking forward to in the coming months, heading in to next year?
Kris: Summer’s just beginning in Australia, so I’ll come back to you on that one!
