When Dubstep first started to fade from the mainstream a couple years ago, many of the genre’s figureheads like Skrillex and Knife Party were the first to abandon the genre in favor of newer styles, leaving many loyal Dubstep fans high and dry. Needless to say, when word got out a few weeks ago of a new Skrillex Dubstep remix, the hype was considerable. Skrillex being the main force behind the popularization of Dubstep, the bar of expectations was also set quite high.
Upon the actual release of the remix (of the original track “Red Lips” by GTA) “https://soundcloud.com/skrillex/gta-red-lips-feat-sam-bruno-skrillex-remix“ there was a flurry of mixed feelings and emotions. First off, the remix isn’t bad, it clearly demonstrates a high level of production expertise, carries the beat quite well throughout and feels very correct and intentional musically. It certainly has the criteria to be considered a solidly-done track, had it been released by an emerging artist. However, Skrillex has long surpassed the status of an emerging artist. And there is an unshakeable feeling that this track isn’t quite on par with some of his earlier releases. Although the track isn’t bad, it just doesn’t have the same innovative magic that Skrillex’s earlier Dubstep was known for. The sound design is nothing new and the composition and arrangement of the track is far from groundbreaking.
Despite the fact that Skrillex’s “Red Lips” remix isn’t exactly mind-blowing, many old school fans are simply thrilled that Skrillex is making dubstep again, and that is a very valid and understandable viewpoint. But at the same time, there is something about this latest work that doesn’t quite satisfy. Either way, Skrillex is not taking any time out of the spotlight and shows no sign of slowing down or stopping his musical efforts, and for as long as he continues, there will always be an audience waiting to listen.</span>
