Willis Nillis – Analysis Paralysis EP – Los Angeles based DJ and producer Willis Nillis is one of those rare artists who culminate genuine originality. Syphoning his high school struggles, he later found solace with his tough reality by putting his experiences into music. Learning to develop unique sounds and write music, Nillis has had over two years to hone his craft.
Fast forward to today and you will see that Willis Nillis has without a doubt not only honed his craft, but has also locked in a musical personality that has to be heard to be fully appreciated. Referenced by some to be bright, colorful and quirky, his brand is presented perfectly with his new Analysis Paralysis EP.
With evident influences ranging from heavy hitters like Barely Alive, Space Laces, Kill the Noise and Skrillex to more downtempo artists including Hermitude, Mura Masa, Noname and Mac DeMarco, the EP shows these influences, but with so much more in store! The EP feels “concept” in style and flares a tasteful blend of lo-fi, kawaii and future bass amongst its four featured songs ‘Boo!’, ‘Great Job!‘, ‘Kawaiian Punch‘ and ‘Spoon Daddy.’
Starting from the beginning, ‘Boo!’ delivers an 8-bit esque melody that is quickly followed by an airy and synthy vibe, only to ultimately come into fruition with tasteful chill lo-fi future bass. Flowing into ‘Great Job!‘, the theme of the EP is continued with more bright bass, sampled sounds, calming melody and more unique future-bass vibes.
Setting ‘Kawaiian Punch‘ apart from its predecessors is its subtle hard-house/drum-n-bass/trap hybrid breakdown that is heard a little over half-way into the song. Ending the EP is ‘Spoon Daddy‘ and if you thought that Willis Nillis wasn’t capable of anything but his established sound from the rest of the extended play, you are sorely mistaken. While he continues the theme of course, he offers some more musical ability, flexing his talent with an underlying moombah melody that lies below his powerful kawaii, future-bass, lo-fi hybrid-infused melody.
Willis Nillis describes about the icons on the EP, “every little icon on the EP artwork has sentimental value to me. For example, the sunflower is for my grandmother, Yia Yia, who is my favorite person in the entire world. The images range from little things like my favorite foods, to the fears that keep me up at night.” On matters of the extended play, he states “I snuck sounds from my favorite super smash bros characters in Great Job! I started ‘Spoon Daddy‘ in 2015 and it originally had me singing vocals on it.”
Bringing a friendly, wide-eyed face to electronic music, this talented and unique DJ and producer hopes that fans will continue resonating with the world of Willis Nillis. Drawing from tasteful genres, scenes and personal experience, this artist is now debuting with his own original and powerful style with his Analysis Paralysis EP. Coming far out of the future-timeline of the EDM Soundscapes, let’s hope he’s here to stay as there is much we can expect from this rising artist!
