Inside Melleefresh’s Musical Journey: 15 Questions on Her Iconic Career and Future in Electronic Music

Delving into the pulsating realm of Electronic Dance Music, Melleefresh stands as a notable figure with a career spanning over three decades. From her early days as part of Melleny Melody & The Pop Machine to her solo journey as Melleefresh, she has continually evolved, leaving her own mark on the genre. Renowned for her playful yet experimental approach to music Production and Electronic Dance music, Melleefresh brings a unique blend of creativity and technical prowess to every track.
In this exclusive interview, we explore 15 questions that unravel her artistic journey, creative process, favorite studio tools, and future aspirations, offering a glimpse into the mind of a trailblazing artist in Electronic Music. 

What was the pivotal moment that made you decide to pursue a career in EDM? 

Before I took the name Melleefresh, I was in a trio called Melleny Melody & The Pop Machine. My two bandmates, Dave Howard and Pete Jarvis, really understood my love of Electronic Dance music and they knew immediately when I presented them with some loungy low-fi jazzy songs how to turn them into banging House music that people would wanna dance to. It was through working with them on new remixes that everything fell into focus. 

 

How do you maintain your creativity and stay inspired after so many years in the industry? 

Being in the studio is MY HAPPY PLACE, every time you enter a studio it’s a brand-new track, new music, new engineer or someone you’ve worked with a lot, and new collaborator /producer, the listening and writing process is magical and then to sing what you have written is epic! I get a natural high always, I Love it! 

 

Your work is known for its playful and experimental approach. Can you describe your creative process when producing a new track?  

Listening to the track and writing a lyric on the spot, having a few choices of ways to go, singing out loud, recording, listening back, making some changes, triple tracking, adding choruses, harmonizing…
Fooling around with different voices (I have a few) I just never know, for me, it’s a super exciting process. 

 

What is your favourite piece of equipment in the studio, and why? 

The microphone, as equipment, but the software for the vocal chain; EQ, Compression, Reverb, Autotune, Vocoder, and a touch of Melodyne.
 

What’s a superpower you would want? 

Invisibility, so I could walk around and hear what people are saying about me after sending a promo out for them to listen toooo. 

 

What’s your favourite emoji to use? 

Lip Kiss 

 

If your life was a festival, what would it be called? 

The MelleeFreshBubbaliciousFest with bubble machines, visual projections, lots of costume changes and lots of surprise special guests, singers and DJs 

 

How do you balance the technical and artistic aspects of music production? 

With good creative, talented, loyal co-workers  

 

What’s one ingredient you put in every track? 

A definite and assorted amount of moans, sound effects, and a smooth n’sexy enticing vocals. 

 

Favourite snack during late-night studio sessions? 

Chinese food, coffee, champagne for after the session. 

 

Current TV obsession? 

The Bear as you watch it you feel like a fly on the wall watching the everyday existence of a very busy restaurant kitchen, getting to know all the different personalities of the individual workers, keeps me on the edge of my chair, it’s pure chaos. 

 

If you could master one instrument, what would it be? 

The CDJs. 

 

What are some things you can’t live without in your daily life?  

My Maybelline kiss proof stay on red lipstick, #20 Pioneer or #325 Shot Caller 

 

Everyone has a guilty pleasure—what’s yours?  

Eating a whole Lobster and drinking champagne in the nude on tar beach. 

  

Finally,what’s one genre or style you want to experiment with in the future 

I’m actually putting together a plan for a new Dance label called Play Rave more Psytrance and Hard Techno.
